Reviewers were happy to report that the Hunger Games trilogy is alive and well, and all looked forward towards the third book within the series after this one's stunning conclusion. But they disagreed over whether Catching Fire was as well as the first book Hunger Games or should be viewed as somewhat of the "sophomore slump." Several critics who remained unconvinced by Katniss's romantic dilemma made unfavorable comparisons for the human-vampire-werewolf love triangle in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. But most reviewers felt that Catching Fire was still a thrill because Collins replicated her initial success at balancing action, violence, and heroism inside a method in which will enthrall young readers without giving them (too many) nightmares.

A Q&A with Suzanne Collins, Author of Mockingjay (The Final Book of The Hunger Games)
Q: You have said from the start that The Hunger Games story was intended like a trilogy. Did it actually end the best way you planned it from the beginning?

A: Very much so. While I didnrrrt know every detail, of course, the arc from the story from gladiator game, to revolution, to war, to the eventual outcome remained constant throughout the writing process.

Q: We understand you worked on the initial screenplay for any film to be depending on The Hunger Games. What may be the biggest difference between writing a novel and writing a screenplay?

A: There were several significant differences. Time, for starters. When you will find yourself adapting a novel in a two-hour movie you can not take everything with you. The story has being condensed to match the newest form. Then there is the question of how best to look at a book told inside first person and present tense and transform it into a satisfying dramatic experience. In the novel, you won't ever leave Katniss for the second and therefore are privy to any any of her thoughts so you'll need a way to dramatize her inner world and to generate it possible for other characters to exist outside of her company. Finally, you have the challenge of the simplest way to present the violence while still maintaining a PG-13 rating to ensure that your core audience can view it. A lot of situations are acceptable on the page that may not be on the screen. But exactly how certain moments are depicted may ultimately be within the director's hands.

Q: Do you think that you're capable of consider future projects while working on The Hunger Games, or are you immersed inside world you're currently creating so fully who's is too hard to think about new ideas?

A: We've several seeds of ideas boating in my head but--given that much of my focus remains on The Hunger Games--it is going to be awhile before one fully emerges and that i can start to develop it.

Q: The Hunger Games is an annual televised event where one boy and something girl from each from the twelve districts is expected to participate in the fight-to-the-death on live TV. What can you think that the appeal of reality television is--to both kids and adults?

A: Well, they're often create as games and, like sporting events, there's an interest in seeing who wins. The contestants are generally unknown, which means they are relatable. Sometimes they have very talented people performing. Then you have the voyeuristic thrill—watching people being humiliated, or brought to tears, or suffering physically--which I have found very disturbing. There's also the potential for desensitizing the audience, to ensure whenever they see real tragedy playing out on, say, the news, it won't have the impact it should.

Q: If you were made to compete inside the Hunger Games, exactly what do you think that your special skill would be?

A: Hiding. I'd be scaling those trees like Katniss and Rue. Since I was trained in sword-fighting, I guess my best hope would be to obtain hold of an rapier if there is one available. But the truth is I'd probably get about a four in Training.

Q: What would you hope readers will come away with whenever they read The Hunger Games trilogy?

A: Questions about how precisely elements in the books might be relevant inside their own lives. And, if they are disturbing, the things they might do about them.

Gr 7 Up–The final installment of Suzanne Collins's trilogy sets Katniss in one more Hunger Game, but on this occasion it's for world control. While it can be a clever twist about the original plot, it means that there is less focus on the individual characters and much more on political intrigue and large scale destruction. That said, Carolyn McCormick is constantly on the breathe life in to a less vibrant Katniss by displaying despair both at those she feels in charge of killing and possibly at her own motives and choices. This is an older, wiser, sadder, and incredibly reluctant heroine, torn between revenge and compassion. McCormick captures these conflicts by changing the pitch and pacing of Katniss's voice. Katniss is both a pawn of the rebels as well as the victim of President Snow, who uses Peeta to make an effort to control Katniss. Peeta's struggles are very evidenced in his voice, which goes from rage to puzzlement to a unsure come back to sweetness. McCormick also helps make the secondary characters—some malevolent, others benevolent, and several confused—very real with distinct voices and agendas/concerns. She acts like an outside chronicler in giving listeners just “the facts” but additionally respects the individuality and unique challenges of each one from the main characters. If there really are only seven original plots inside world, it's odd that boy meets girl is always mentioned, and society goes bad and attacks the great guy never is. Yet we now have Fahrenheit 451, The Giver, Your Home of the Scorpion—and now, following a long tradition of Brave New Worlds, The Hunger Games. Collins hasn't tied her future to some specific date, or weighted it down with excessive finger wagging. Rather less 1984 and rather more Death Race 2000, hers is often a gripping story set in the postapocalyptic world in which a replacement to the United states of america demands a tribute from each of its territories: two children to become used as gladiators inside a televised fight on the death.Katniss, from that which was once Appalachia, offers to look at the host to her sister inside the Hunger Games, but after this ultimate sacrifice, she is entirely focused on survival at any cost. It is her teammate, Peeta, who recognizes the significance of holding onto one's humanity in such inhuman circumstances. It's a credit to Collins's skill at characterization that Katniss, like a whole new Theseus, is cold, calculating and still likable. She has got the attributes to be a winner, where Peeta has the grace to be a fantastic loser.It's no accident that these games are presented as pop culture. Every generation projects its fear: runaway science, communism, overpopulation, nuclear wars and, now, reality TV. Hawaii of Panem—which needs to keep its tributaries subdued and it is citizens complacent—may have came up with Games, but mindless television could be the real danger, the means through which society pacifies its citizens and punishes those who neglect to conform. Will its connection to reality TV, ubiquitous today, date the book? It might, but for now, it makes this the best book with the right time. What happens if we choose entertainment over humanity? In Collins's world, we'll be obsessed with grooming, we'll talk funny, and our sentences can finish using the same rise as questions. When Katniss is shipped to stylists to be made more telegenic before she competes, she stands naked facing them, strangely unembarrassed. They're so unlike people that i am you can forget self-conscious than if a trio of oddly colored birds were pecking around my feet, she thinks. In order not to hate these creatures who are sending her to her death, she imagines them as pets. It isn't the contestants who risk the loss of the humanity. It is all who watch. Katniss struggles to win not only the Games but the inherent contest for audience approval. Because this can be the first book in the series, not things are resolved, and what is left unanswered may be the central question. Has she sacrificed too much? We understand what she has given around survive, and not perhaps the price was too high. Readers will wait eagerly to master more.
